Justice Kavanaugh Was Assassinated Near His Home In Maryland
A man armed with a gun, knife, and lanyard was arrested Wednesday near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home in Maryland after threatening to kill justice.
Nicholas John Roske, 26, of Simi Valley, California, is charged with the wilful murder of a Supreme Court judge. During a trial, he agreed to continue in federal custody to this day.
Roske was dressed in black as he arrived by taxi just after 1 a.m. outside Kavanaugh’s home in suburban Washington. He had a Glock 17 pistol, ammunition, a knife, lanyard, pepper spray, duct tape, and other items that he told police he would use to break into the home. Kavanaugh and killed him, according to the criminal complaint and affidavit filed with the federal government and the court in Maryland. Roske said he bought the gun to kill Kavanaugh and that he was going to kill himself too, the affidavit said.
Roske told police he was saddened by a leaked draft opinion showing that the Supreme Court was about to handle Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion case. He also said he was saddened by the school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, and believed Kavanaugh would vote to relax gun control laws, the affidavit said.
As he stepped out of the taxi, Roske was spotted by two US Marshals, who were in charge of 24-hour security made available to judges following the leak of draft comments last month. But Roske was only arrested after he called 911 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and said he was contemplating suicide and planning to kill Kavanaugh, after finding the address of justice online. Roske was still on the phone when Montgomery County police arrived at the scene, according to the affidavit.
During his first appearance in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, Roske paused several times before answering routine questions from U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Sullivan during the 10-hour hearing. minute.
Asked if he understood what was going on and if he was thinking clearly, Roske paused, then said: “I think I have a reasonable understanding, but I won’t. say I’m thinking clearly.”
Roske said he was taking the drug, but did not say what it was or why he was taking it. He also said he was a college graduate.
